International Code Council (ICC) Takes Action on ASHRAE Proposals

Under a proposal to the International Mechanical Code (IMC), inspection and maintenance of HVAC systems will be required by ANSI/ASHRAE/ACCA Standard 180-2008, Standard Practice for Inspection and Maintenance of Commercial Building HVAC Systems. There Is More To The Local Movement Than Just Food

I came across this study on “Buying Local”. Granted it is a few years old, but I think it enforces the concept, that we must buy local. This has been the mantra for Eco Custom Homes for many years. Buy Local. I only use cabinets made by a local craftsman, using wood that was reclaimed from local trees. An example of this is the hardwood floors, we installed earlier this year in a Atlanta home renovation project. We used quarter sawn oak flooring, in 6″ to 12″ widths. This wood was produced from naturally felled trees from Atlanta. This lumber was kiln dried in Blue Ridge, GA and final milled in Woodstock, GA. Cradle to cradle, everything on these floors were done within a 50 mile radius of Atlanta, GA. To top it all off, the pricing was inline with store bought products. Please read on and remember to “Buy Local”

Bio-Based Phase-Changing Material Adds Instant Thermal Mass

I want to thank Lloyd Alter for finding the product for us at Greenbuild 2010. One of the Passive House techniques we talk about is thermal mass. Usually the best way to increase the thermal mass of a project is to use 5/8 sheetrock, but this product looks very interesting. Buy using this product on interior, un insulated walls, we can greatly increase the thermal mass of a project. In fact, I am in the middle of a “Green” renovation of my existing home, so I’m going to vet this product out. I’ll let you know my thoughts in a later post.
