1890s Decatur Home
PROJECT SUMMARY
This late 19th century home in Decatur was converted into a multifamily rental property during a period of decline in the 1970s. Our goal was to restore it back into a period appropriate yet fully modern and sustainable single family home.
When we began this project, the floor plan was so heavily modified that it was hard to get a handle on the original layout of the home. We performed a limited deconstruction of the home. Removing partition walls and the dropped ceiling to expose the original 12-foot ceilings and reveal a pair of pocket doors. The architect was then brought in to develop a floor plan that included an expansion into the attic for a 600 sq. ft. master suite. Most of the period details were destroyed during the 70s era conversions but along with the the pocket doors we were able to salvage two claw foot bath tubs and most of the windows. The home now looks original from the outside with an interior respecting the home’s history but constructed with a modern lifestyle in mind.
